I think it was more for seeing where they could get Gryphon reinforcements to land and to get a good spying angle on the enemy camp. Or possibly to see how good a border post/Aerial Corps stopping point it would be? Who knows. Maybe Peter just likes climbing cliffs and comes up with excuses. XD
