PROMPT: from
whynot : Superheroing ain't what it used to be. Superheroes are getting disillusioned, giving into the glitz of the paparazzi and reality TV, but there is one hero who still believes in doing good.
TITLE: Unmasked
TYPE: Drama/sci-fi, in 13-episode seasons.
SETTING: 2040, Earth.
OPENING CREDITS SONG: Crash Years - The New Pornographers
CLOSING CREDITS SONG: Help I'm Alive - Metric
SYNOPSIS: Nicole Clary has spent her entire life waiting for this - graduation day and her induction into the ranks of superheroes. She knows the rules inside out - no masks, no secret identities, follow orders. What she doesn't expect is to find that the superheroes the world so looks up to seem more like supervillains up close. At first she just thinks they're too caught up with fame and wealth and power, but it doesn't take long for her to begin to realize that the League has committed horrible crimes in the name of justice and peace. Horrified, she looks for help in an unlikely place - a paralyzed first-generation superhero and her gang of teen masked, unregistered vigilantes.

NICOLE CLARY
age 19. codename Phoenix/Crossfire. powers superhuman strength and pyrokinetics. playedby Alona Tal.
I still believe in justice and hope and peace. And maybe that makes me a fool, but I'm okay with that. Because you know what? It's what's kept me alive.
Naive, idealistic, and hopeful, Nicole always strives to find the best in people. The consummate cape, she has dreamed her entire life of being a superhero, using her abilities to help people. She always knew that her abilities would put her in the heavy hitting roster, rather than out on a day to day basis, but once she begins to realize that the superheroes around her consider saving someone just a photo-op, and frequently don't bother, she starts teaching herself how to adapt her powers so that she can rescue people in enclosed and crowded spaces without causing collateral damage. Always willing to push herself that extra mile, she remains the group's most stubborn and motivated even without their reasons. Along with Blake, she's also the most clearly heroic, refusing to kill and always trying to refrain from causing any serious damage.

ROSLYN CALL
age 65. codename Lady. powers none. playedby Paget Brewster (I know she's too young for it, but she is exactly perfect.)
What do you want to hear? That this all goes down well? It doesn't. If we win this battle, there's another, and another, and another. And people will get tired again. They'll get angry and they'll want it all to end. Just. End. And that day, this whole thing will start again. Nic - Crossfire. We're not fighting to win forever. We're fighting to win today. And if we're lucky, one more year.
One of the first five superheroes, and the only unpowered one, Roslyn Call was the most mysterious of them all. She considered her civilian identity more important than her superhero identity, tended to leave matters to the police whenever possible, and successfully kept her identity a complete secret from all but one other superhero. Having lived through the death of most of her friends and her son, she's been nursing a grudge against the League for twenty two years. But for most of that time, there was nothing she could do. Paralyzed by an attempted assassination in her civilian ID soon after her son's death, all she could do was help hide the heroes who wanted hiding. She tried to rally them time and again, but it didn't work. Now desperate enough to use teenagers, she's ready to take back the world she once protected. She remains, even from a wheelchair, one of the more formidable opponents you could have.

BLAKE CALL
age 23. codename Nightshade. powers manipulation of darkness and some camouflage ability. playedby Harry Shum, Jr.
She didn't thank me because I scared her almost more than that mugger did, Crossfire. I manipulate shadows and you can't see me coming. Do I look like a big friendly puppy to you? Because if so, you may be more screwed up than any of us, and that is saying something.
The only son of Richard Call (codename Gamma) and Ellie Wu (codename Camouflage), his mother died seven months after his birth and his father was murdered only a year later. He was raised by Lady. After his powers manifested, she put him through intensive training to make sure he had them under complete control, but refused to allow him to become a vigilante, as he wanted. Upon turning 18, he left to travel, and soon took up a masked identity. He almost died when the League came after him, and Lady rescued him. Since then, she's agreed to let him continue his vigilante work, but only under her strict supervision. More thoughtful now, steady, and with the clearest focus on the goal, he understands exactly what's at stake, but holds himself to a strict code of morals, refusing to compromise them no matter what.

AYSU KAPLAN
age 17. codename Stiletto. powers ability to to create blades/rods out of any element and manipulate them from a distance, low-level precognition. playedby Julia Jones.
If you think I want to talk about my feelings, you really haven't figured out anything about this family yet. We're all emotionally repressed and needy here, Nicky. Also, you're in front of my target. Please move, I need to stab things.
The daughter of two superheroes who were forced to run after refusing to register, Aysu spent her life running and staying under the radar. Angry and confused, she didn't understand why she couldn't use the powers she'd been given for good. Her precognition manifested in an ability to know what someone close to her is going to do a second or two before they do, something that comes in handy in fights. Two years before the start of the show, she slipped up, which led to her parents being recognized and murdered by the League, staged to look like a murder-suicide. Lady and Nightshade barely managed to extract Aysu from her school before she was kidnapped and taken by the League. Angry, depressed, driven, and unable to have a civilian life, Aysu spends the majority of her time training. Though she would never admit it, she's envious of Nicole's happy life. She's in it for the vengeance. Throughout the show, she comes to terms with her parent's death. Her defining moment is facing her parent's murderer and sparing his life, despite the fact that nobody was there to see what she did to him.

MARCUS CALL
age 16. codename Omen. powers telepathy/empathy, telekinesis, and high levels of precognition. playedby Kyle Gallner.
You think that was good? I haven't even started yet. Watch!
Arguably the most powerful of the group, Marcus was abandoned by his parents at birth. Lady adopted him when he was three, noticing some unexplained incidents around him, and kept him closely supervised until he had his powers under full control. He has epilepsy, triggered by his precognition, and travels with a wolfhound named Shadow trained to keep him safe if he suffers an episode. Easily frustrated and temperamental, he frequently considers his powers a curse. At the same time, he's a relatively typical teenager - the first to laugh at a joke, the most exuberant, the most excited about missions, overconfident, boisterous, and hormonal. He insists on accompanying them on missions, despite it requiring him to take a drug that temporarily blocks both his precognition and fits. Since the drug isn't compatible with his body, it lasts about twelve hours before he experiences severe nausea and a high fever as his body gets rid of it. Lady generally tries to keep him safely home, but she remembers how badly trying to stop Blake turned out and so lets him win some of the fights about getting to go on missions.
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

NADIA COLLIER. age 28. codename Waterfall. powers hydrokinesis, ability to turn into water. playedby Jasika Nicole.
I'm to understand that you expect me to be okay with sending kids into the field? Hell no. Absolutely not.
Lady's woman on the inside, Nadia was recruited a year ago when her mother was kidnapped and threatened by the League because Nadia strayed out of line. Pretending to have reformed and become a model member of the League, Nadia feeds Lady all the information she can. She's vehemently opposed to the idea of teenagers fighting Lady's war, but has reluctantly worked with them a few times. Honorable and tough, she mostly just wants to be able to live a mostly quiet life, know that her family is safe, and save people when she can.

ANDREW VALENTINE. age 36. codename Hunter. powers shapeshifting into animals, telepathic communication with animals. playedby Jensen Ackles.
You know what? This is over. I'm finishing this, now. No more running. No more hiding. Not. Fucking. Ever. Again.
The sidekick to the original Hunter, he was only 14 when the League was taken over. Hunter, one of the original five superheroes, was quick to realize what was going on, and equally quick to meet an accident. Andrew went underground immediately after, and hasn't surfaced since. But now Lady's tracked him down. They've got work to do, and she wants him in on it. He doesn't. But Lady generally gets what she wants, and Andrew has always felt guilty that he wasn't there to protect Hunter. Part of him sees this as a chance to make up for that. (The other part of him suggests running away, now, and never stopping.) Bitter and tired, he's had to leave behind the people he's loved again and again over the past 22 years, keep himself alive with only what help Lady could offer over a distance, and always keep an eye out over his shoulder. Takes an interest in training Aysu, since neither of them can have a civilian life, and they form a slightly dysfunctional father/daughter relationship.

STERLING MAKER. age 42. codename Bullet. powers impossible aiming skills, incredible agility. playedby Sebastian Roche.
Have you ever seen a superhuman with the ability to manipulate the dark? And do you have any idea how difficult it is to aim when you can't actually see anything? Don't worry about it, though. I've got this.
Slipstream's right-hand man, Sterling is in charge of assimilating young heroes out of school and into the ranks, as well as keep an eye out for trouble, help hunt down dissidents, keep a database of ways to take down any one of the known superpowered humans, and anything else that requires behind the scenes work. Cold, calculating, and mostly bored, his main hope is for a challenger that will actually be difficult to put down. As a result, he finds Lady's team the most fun he's had in years, as they not only pose a real threat to the work he's done but prove not only incredibly resilient but extremely dangerous. Blake beats him in the first episode and then spares his life, and from then Sterling is entranced and obsessed with the group to the point of unhealthiness.

FLEUR ABNEY. age 18. codename Mirage. powers ability to create illusions. playedby Summer Glau.
I can make an entire city think they're living in a wasteland. I can make you believe that your fingers were just cut off. Do you know how - useful - that is to them? Do you know what they'd do to keep me working for them?
Nicole's best friend from Excelsior, she's been co-opted by the questioning department. The few times Nicole has seen her since, Fleur has seemed different - scared, depressed, and worried. It turns out she's been used to help torture prisoners with threats to her family's safety if she doesn't cooperate. She and her family are successfully extracted and hidden by the team, and she returns a few times to help them on important missions or just to hang out with Nicole.

BRIAN AVANA. age 47. codename Slipstream. powers speed approaching that of light (slowing down now), some persuasion (though whether it's a power or just his personality is questionable). playedby Hugh Laurie.
This is trying my nerves. I have built an entire empire without anyone noticing. I refuse to let four children take it down.
The commander of the League and the hero who initiated its takeover, he's smooth, charismatic, and very dangerous. His superhero mother was killed when he was young, and when he followed in her footsteps he found that all he could expect was danger and hard work, rather than the wealth and fame he was hoping for. He saw how ungrateful people could be and determined that from now on, the League would change. And it did.

MARTIN GERLACH. age 37. codename Justice. powers none. playedby Shemar Moore.
So there's a... bunch of guys out there. I think we're pretty badly outnumbered. Remember, according to all fiction that means the odds are on our side. We can do it.
Martin was an FBI agent who had been secretly working on compiling evidence against the League for its many crimes. When that puts him in harm's way, the team rescues him and he temporarily comes to live with the Call's, Andrew and Aysu while Lady gets him a new ID and a hiding place. It doesn't take him long to conclude that he'd rather stay with them and fight the good fight, and it doesn't take him much longer to fall for Andrew, who is perfectly happy to make out with him a lot and doesn't even realize how much he loves Martin at first. Martin trains under Lady personally, and takes his codename as a sort of tribute to her. She laughs when he says it for the first time, and Aysu stifles a giggle and then tries to keep him out of the field because damn it, she LIKES having two parents again, she'd prefer the nonpowered one not be in dangerous situations, okay?
OTHER
I, um, actually know a lot about the early years of the League - its founders Vixen, Chimera, Lady, Hunter, Artemis - and the things that happened. There is a shitload of backstory here, I'm not even kidding. Why Vixen and Chimera left (there was an outlash against magic, and their whole community went even deeper underground - Chimera was angry and disillusioned, and Vixen wouldn't abandon her girlfriend, so they both retired). Why Artemis left (her second-in-command died, and Artemis had to return to her people). Who Lady had her son with (a civilian she was in love with and married, who died of cancer before all this mess started). Other heroes, how the government tried to go after them and then agreed to work with them, etc. But that is a whole different show! THAT IS A SHOW ABOUT BEGINNINGS. This is a show about revolution. (... I am so predictable, *facepalm*.)
At some point in time there is a Xanatos Gambit in which Lady convinces the League that she has a clone of Nicole, complete with her powers, in order to let Nicole remain in good standing with the League but also use her powers on missions for Lady.
There's a spin-off comic dedicated to Andrew and Martin and their crazy adventures and how they basically adopt Aysu and run around being terribly proud of their kickass daughter and beating up bad guys.
