you can never be quite the old self again
May. 13th, 2009 09:34 pmReading "A Prince of Our Disorder" by John E. Mack on recommendation of
almostinstinct , and enjoying it greatly. The excerpts from Lawrence's letters have a very lyrical feel to them. My two particular favorites so far-
"And you can never be quite the old self again. You have forgotten a little bit: or rather pushed it out with a little of the inspiration of what is immortal in someone who has gone before you." -about reading books
"So I fall between them into the nihilism which cannot find, in being, even a false God in which to believe." -on differences between Bedouins and the 'overcivilized' Europeans
I feel like something's just out of reach and I've no idea what this something might be and I'm fairly certain whatever it is I'm heading straight into the metaphysical existential quandary territory again and I'm very tired of that, thanks very much.
Happenstance Harbor is shaping up more in my head. I've finally figured out where the starting point is going to be, and how I can condense the plot into a reasonable timespace (before it was trying to spread out over THREE YEARS. At least!).
While messing around, figured I'd list my WIP's, whether they're ever getting completed or not.
At the First Glimpse of Thunder, original fic
So that's... 7 WIP's, at least 150K (because I completed three NaNo's) in just under four years. That's also not counting two completed stories co-written with a friend and two others started with her. Or was it three others? We had a lot of trouble finding another one that worked. Also not counting NaNo '05, about 2K when I was ... 12? and was ridiculous, the alternate NaNo '07 where a girl wrote a NaNo novel (oh, but I loved the plot of her novel, I wanted to write that one instead of her writing it if that makes any sense at all?) and the original NaNo '08 which ended up being about 12K and a lot of moralizing and gray areas and like A Song of Ice and Fire in that nobody was good and everyone was bad and it was a mire of political manuevering and evilness and gray and battle and ohgodohgodwe'reallgonnadie! At which point I was like 'WHATEVER' and started writing the one where people were COOL. And not necessarily bad or good but still. COOL.
OH WAIT. I'm also forgetting that one where everyone died! ... what was that plot? I should go look for it. I think it was something about the Young King and Ned and didn't Ned's father get his tongue ripped out? Oh yeah he did. I liked Ned, which of course means that I was evil to him. Oooh, and there was that half-god leading the Westmarch! He was cool! I really need to go looking through my papers and catalogue them somehow because my goodness where did this all come from? I... I really don't remember how I got half of this figured out or started and I'm pretty sure I'm counting somewhere around 300K in all here. I shall think more about this tomorrow. It's summer, after all! I have time to catalogue all my papers!

Shadows of Sunshine, original fic
The one that is cliche. Really, really cliche. Twins, magic, elves, scary bad guy, supposed to be a trilogy. Started when I was... twelve? Finished the first book.
Blademistress, original fic - NaNo '06
Quests and magic, the beginning of me trying out some originality, still cliche. Set in the Shadows of Sunshine world v. 2.0
Dark Wings Spreading, original fic
The one where I first start really exploring world-building and setting up the rules of magic. Also the one where there are elves with wings. Currently the last one set in my Shadows of Sunshine world.
Walk The Tides, original fic - NaNo '07
The one where there's a crazy assassin who can cross between our world and another and is always the same age when she comes back to Earth. Looking back, I laugh at how similar this is to Narnia in parts of the premise, because this was written and conceived before I ever went into Narnia fandom at all.
Untitled, original fic - NaNo '08
The one where I take elements of Avatar and write a semi-realistic depiction of children in war fighting for freedom. Kids die, things are dire, and people fall in love.
Untitled, original fic
Wall fics! The ones where I create an alternate Roman world where the Romans have magic creatures.
The one where I do colonial fantasy and spend hours researching and frequently freak out to everyone I know. EVERYONE. And then consider the possibilities of telekinesis in battle and a slow healing speed-up and what would happen if you... yeah. Also, more throwing kids into war. I am good at this, guys.
