Out of curiosity, has anyone on my f-list read this short story? It's called The Lottery, and it's by Shirley Jackson, and it has to be one of the best short stories I've ever read and at the same time the most horrifying.

It really feels like an alternate reality to me, and I want so badly to know more about this place, because no matter how scary it is it also sounds really interesting to write about.

I bet there's magic over the mountains and everybody's terrified of it.

Yeah, I read that when I was 13 or 14. It really made a lasting impression.

Read many times in high school and college. That's what you get for being an English major.

The secret to making a story interesting is to get people to care but give just enough to make them want more.

OH. I REMEMBER THAT.

My 8th grade English teacher read it to our class. But I'd heard/read it before previously. *shudders*

oh my god, that was freaky. I remember finding it in an anthology and expecting it to be a completely different story I had read before. Then it was so different and terrifying. *shudder*
