curiousity killed the cat but not me

Out of curiosity, has anyone on my f-list read this short story? It's called The Lottery, and it's by Shirley Jackson, and it has to be one of the best short stories I've ever read and at the same time the most horrifying.

It really feels like an alternate reality to me, and I want so badly to know more about this place, because no matter how scary it is it also sounds really interesting to write about.

I bet there's magic over the mountains and everybody's terrified of it.

*shudders* Yes, that it has. I love how she can make it seem all peaceful and idyllic and then there's these little undertones and you start getting uneasy and worried.

I had to read it for school, it freaked me out pretty badly.

Read many times in high school and college. That's what you get for being an English major.

That's good news. I hope you aren't having any bad reactions to pregnancy - I know of some people who have gotten majorly allergic to all sorts of things and such other side effects.

Honestly, most of the time I don't like short stories much, but that one was just so good. I've liked a few others, but I can't remember names right now other than 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty', which I thought was very interesting.

oh my god, that was freaky. I remember finding it in an anthology and expecting it to be a completely different story I had read before. Then it was so different and terrifying. *shudder*
