Found more poetry!
Also, most important thing to remember while writing 'At the First Glimpse of Thunder' or whatever part of it I end up writing next -
This is an AU of Earth. It is not Earth.
This means that America doesn't have to win the Revolution.
Huh.
*considers possibilities*

Date: 2009-07-16 03:43 pm (UTC)For instance, I've decided that at this point England has not yet taken control of Canada, and New Orleans of course is under the Spanish still, though it's soon going back to the French (who don't sell it to America because there is no America to sell it to!).
During the war, Cedric is sent to N. O. to try to get aid from the Spanish, Sebastian is sent to Canada to try to get aid from the French, and they are still there when America is defeated, whereupon they stay there. Cedric is more or less like "FUCK THIS SHIT, ENGLAND TORTURED MY KID BROTHER" and becomes a doctor in New Orleans and gets involved with pirates. Sebastian and Cecilia hang out in Canada and get involved with the resistance against the English when France sells Canada to them.
Things happen. WHEEEEEEE!

Date: 2009-07-17 02:44 pm (UTC)Oh, Monroes. You make me so happy.

Date: 2009-07-17 02:53 pm (UTC)Aww, Sebastian and Cecilia! Of course they'd be rebels, probably the leaders of some underground resistance. :)
Also, I love Holland and politics. Let the stuffy English government officials know who's boss. ♥

Date: 2009-07-17 03:06 pm (UTC)Also, Sebastian's mom? The one I never talk about? Was more or less an Indian 'princess'. So Sebastian gets along with the Indians in Canada really well.
She does it through society - she quietly starts chains of gossip about all sorts of important government leaders. Very quietly, so that no one would suspect her. And when she actually has something against them, she does blackmail. That woman is fierce.

Date: 2009-07-17 03:36 pm (UTC)Yay! So Indian cooperation isn't a problem. :D
Now that is the best way to do that kind of thing. Reminds me of school except so much cooler. Go Holland!

If people in government actually noticed that there was a pattern (which of course they don't) to the politicians getting blackened by gossip, they would notice that it was all people who had a history of speaking against America.
(Also, America itself? Not doing so great right now. The Tories are coming back triumphant, the Rebels are ticked, prominent leaders have been hanged or forced to swear loyalty to England, and the entire seething mess is about two inches from civil war.)

Date: 2009-07-17 05:45 pm (UTC)Haha is it weird that all this makes me think of the French and Indian War?
Oh, America, so screwed up. <3333

Date: 2009-07-17 06:03 pm (UTC)Apparently, it's not enough for me to screw my characters up, I've got to screw up my country too. O.o

Date: 2009-07-17 06:56 pm (UTC)Well America did lose the Revolutionary War in any case, so it's almost insurprising that the country's messed up.
Also, out of curiosity, your armies/navys have gunpowder, right? How would you write warfare with, say, muskets/cannons? I'm not sure if I should give Merchantverse gunpowder or not, and it's really bothering me.

Date: 2009-07-17 07:35 pm (UTC)ALSO, HELP. Holland has informed me that Adam ties and she takes up with Cedric in New Orleans. CEDRIC. MY BRAIN, IT IS DEAD.
Yeah, they definitely have gunpowder - we're talking early rifles/cannons at this point, I would guess. I'm not going to be actually writing almost any fighting, because none of the Monroes are near any (except for Adam). Re: Merchantverse, how advanced do you want the ships to be? Because that will give you a fairly good idea of whether there's gunpowder or not (if it's very close to Earth, that is).

Date: 2009-07-17 09:38 pm (UTC)Adam ties? ...What exactly does that mean? And isn't she in England anyways? Well...um, could you possibly write it off as a drunken one-night sort of thing? Or has it already become a la Peter/Susan?
Oh yeah it's all rather close to Earth technology-wise. Well I'm pretty sure that we need cannons (one scene would be nigh impossible to write without them), so I guess I really have no choice about gunpowder.

Date: 2009-07-17 09:50 pm (UTC)I think going with gunpowder is probably a good idea. Other than that, how's Merchantverse going? You haven't talked about it much recently - is it coming at all?

Date: 2009-07-17 10:25 pm (UTC)Merchantverse? It's coming, all rather slowly. I may be saving it for NaNo (is it cheating if I start it before November?). But there are also some technicalities to work out: such as for what reason would pirates keep Georgia alive, imprisoned, and preferably not raped?

Date: 2009-07-17 11:03 pm (UTC)Not cheating, but it doesn't really count as a NaNo win according to the official rules. Which is to say, it is NaNo! They don't recommend starting ahead of time, but they won't penalize you for it. The main thing is to get 50K done (OMG CAN'T WAIT FOR NANO WHEEEE!).
... I... do not know why the pirates would do that. Maybe she tricks them somehow? Convinces them she's worth some sort of money if they keep her alive? Hmmm. Interesting dilemma.

Date: 2009-07-18 06:36 pm (UTC)And why does my crazy brain think angsty Seb/Celia as a result of that?Hmm...I think I'll just do mostly plotty & researchy stuff for now, that way I have most of that out of the way in time for NaNo (last time I killed all my time doing worldbuilding and fail!stuff).
That is actually probable...they keep Marcus alive because they know they can get a ransom off him (his father may be dead, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't got wealthy family members...and his mother is quite the independent woman), so I guess she could pretend that...she was Marcus' sister? And he could threaten to do something to himself (read: hang himself or something) if they rape her?
