be_themoon: I want a better world. By me. (Narnia: Pevensies: a posteriori)
[personal profile] be_themoon
Someone said recently that Uhura was 'just the love interest' in the Trek reboot, which irritated me a great deal. I wrote a bit of a rant/essay on women characters and then discovered that voila! [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales had done it better! so go read it if you haven't already! (since it's been making a lot of the rounds, there's a strong chance you have.)

You guys, this song is so cute/pretty/awesome! Mason Jennings sings it slow kind of slow and ... peaceful? and my sister Mary sings it with this fast upbeat pace and both versions are really fun to listen to/sing along with.

On to the Top Five meme! Picture/.gif heavy!

Top Five things to cook for [livejournal.com profile] zempasuchil
5. whole wheat raisin bread
It's fun! I really like making it and eating it, and I've always liked kneading dough. Plus, in our version I get to roll the dough out and put boiled raisins and cinnamon and honey and butter all over it. Our version is good.

4. cheese quesadillos with chicken and black beans
These things are fantastically good, and pretty simple to make. If you have a griddle, you can make the quesadillos on that, or in a frying pan - you just put down a tortilla, sprinkle some cheese on top, and put another tortilla on top of that, and flip it until it's golden-brown on both sides and the cheese is melted. Then you cook basic black beans and chicken breasts cut up into little bits and fried in oil and salt and pepper, and you put the chicken and black beans on the quesadillo and wrap it around them. I love it. My sister Mary actually came up with the idea. She made it for us when we visited her at college.

3. rueben sandwiches
I love these things so much, and making them is fun too.

2. boston cream pie
My dad's favorite dessert. It's actually pretty tricky to make, at least for the recipe I have (and I cook completely from scratch almost 100% of the time, so). therefore, once you finish making it and it's just right and the custard didn't curdle and the chocolate icing isn't grainy, it feels really really good.

1. brownies
Do I... do I even have to explain this one you guys? BROWNIES. *om nom*

Top Five ships for [profile] sagee_x3
5. Polly/Mal (Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett)
Polly's a girl devoted to her family, protective of her older, slightly slow brother, and plenty brave and smart. Mal's a vampire who decided war would be exciting, who's developed a coffee addiction to replace her thirst for blood, and who's snarky, rarely talks about herself, and is decidedly smart. And together they are so awesome. Unfortunately, there's no real artwork for the book that shows them. D:

4. Zuko/Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

You know, Aang/Katara is sweet and fluffy and cuddly, but they're so young and Aang's only really got a crush on her (also, he's 13. I'm sorry, I draw the line somewhere). And I really do adore Zuko/Mai - I think it's a really wonderful relationship and I love the way Mai and Zuko complement each other. But Zuko and Katara work so well together, and there's always been tension between them, and she cared about him before any of the others really did, and he's had this almost fixation on her from the very beginning. They fit together so perfectly it's hard not to ship them. I really, really love how they fit together. (And that is post-series artwork by one of the main animators for Avatar, so.)

3. Starbuck/Apollo (Battlestar Galactica Reimagined Series)

You guys, this ship is fabulous. You should all ship them. You should all love them as much as I do. I really, really love these two together, in any respect at all, but especially as lovers. They work fantastically together, they're a really great team, she can make him laugh and he can make her actually smile, they know how to hurt each other and they try not to, they know how to fix each other and they try to, and seeing her in a dress makes him forget how to talk to women. Also? There's no take-backs. There are never any take-backs.

2. Morgana/Arthur/Gwen/Merlin (or any permutation thereof) (BBC Merlin)

First off, these people are all ridiculous amounts of pretty. Secondly, they all have ridiculous amounts of chemistry. Thirdly, they all run around constantly saying how much they all love each other. There is no end to how awesome these four people are, and I quite seriously do ship almost every permutation of this. The only one that's lost my interest is Arthur/Merlin, probably mostly because it is so obvious and everyone else in the whole world ships it. It is still a fabulous ship, I just currently find Arthur/Morgana, Morgana/Gwen, Arthur/Gwen and Merlin/Morgana the most interesting. (Also, I almost put Uther into the mix too, but I thought that might be taking it too far. XD)

1. Peter/Susan (Chronicles of Narnia)

You know what, guys? I get it, okay. C. S. Lewis is sobbing in his grave and needs anti-depressants, incest is wrong, they wouldn't think of each other like that, etc. etc. and so forth. I don't care (especially about Lewis, because his lack of research makes me angry). I love them together. He's the High King, the most important man in Narnia, and she's Queen Susan, his second-in-command, really, and they love each other. And it is as simple as that for me, now, though it took a fair bit of convincing originally. You want to know what convinced me? These and these. No more arguing. Just read them, even if you hate the pairing, because they are works of art.

Top Five Peter/Susan moments (fic or canon) for [livejournal.com profile] katakokk
(I'm going to go with movieverse canon because fic would make me die of indecision. All .gifs by [livejournal.com profile] karanna1 )
Honorable Mention - Coronation (LWW)

You can only see a little bit of it here, but almost the first thing they do after sitting down is look at each other, and there's this look of awe and disbelief and wonder and joy on their faces. It makes me so happy!

5. Train Station Fight (PC)

He looks up at her, and she's shaking her head and looking disappointed at him and that's all it takes to make him look devastated and almost ashamed. You can tell he didn't want her to be here, seeing him like this, and for such a tiny moment it's so poignant.

4. Waterfall (LWW)

This moment isn't even particularly shippery, it's just so awesome and I love how he wants so badly to listen to her but at the same time he knows he can do this, and she's being her practical self and doesn't want to believe in fairy tales and swords and magic, she just wants to be home and have her brother back.

3. Susan Almost Falls (PC)

Susan almost falls, to death or severe injury, and Peter turns around and sees it. Caspian runs up next to him and is all 'oh noez!' but Peter is just completely still except for a quick glance towards whoever came up to him, and his sheer terror is all in his eyes. He is so scared for her, and he's the first one she looks to, and gives a quick nod. And he breathes. It's adorable.

2. Wolf Rescue (LWW)

This whole sequence is awesome. Peter says 'Susan' as soon as he hears her horn. She's the first one he thinks of, and she's the first one out of the tree, and I love how he looks towards them as soon as he's knighted and she's beaming with pride. In short, it's a fabulous scene.

1. Battle Hug (PC)

What? You knew this was coming! It's one of my favorite scenes possibly ever, and you can see on Susan's face how she's not sure if she'll ever see him alive again, and he's not sure if he'll ever see her again, and they just stare at each other and the ground and are amazing and I love them so much. *goes to watch Prince Caspian again* Um. What?

Top Five Edmund pictures for [livejournal.com profile] katakokk
(I took a liberty and extended it to Skandar pictures, because there are not nearly enough high-quality screencaps. D:)
5.

I don't actually know what I love so much about this picture. Probably the smile. And the coat. And the... is that a scarf? It is a very thick scarf, if it is. I wish I had a scarf that awesome. *envious*

4.

.... I'm not going to be doing much explaining here.

3.

Or here.

2.

This explaining thing is overrated, guys.

1.

Man, he has really big hands. That's kind of cool. XD

Top Five favorite books (and why) for [livejournal.com profile] katakokk
5. Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
Honestly, you just have to read it, you guys. The characters are awesome, the plot is fabulous but doesn't mind poking fun at itself, it's basically about feminism, and I really really love it. <333

4. Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
Possibly the funniest book ever written, and it's about the Apocalypse. There are not words to say how funny this is, and yet in parts how serious. It's honestly one of the best books I've ever read, and it's always capable of cheering me up. Always.

3. Middle-Earth Books by J. R. R. Tolkien (some edited and compiled by Christopher Tolkien)
Yes, yes, this is cheating, this is a whole bunch of books, but I couldn't pick just one! They range from kids books like The Hobbit to the mythology-laden, heavy thinking books like The Silmarillion, and the stories are some of the best I've read. They're the basis for half the fantasy out there and they're some of the best traditional fantasy, if not the best, ever written. And they're by a linguistic professor, which earns them an instant place in my heart. (Languages and Communication <333333)

2. The Iron Peacock by Mary Stetson Clarke
You guys, I love this book. It's historical fiction romance, with believable characters and reactions and emotions and I absolutely love Joanna and Ross and the ending makes me laugh/cry every single time and the love story is believable and she plays the bag pipes and this is getting incoherent. It's a great story, and you should read it (also, The Calico Bush, which is similar in type and also a great read).

1. The Betsy-Tacy-Tib Series by Maud Hart Lovelace
More historical fiction! Betsy grows up at the turn of the century (at the beginning, her father drives a horse and buggy to work, and she is around 22 when America enters WWI). The first several books are definitely for kids, but they should be read just to understand the later books, and also because they're whimsical and loads of fun. Then there's six thick books - one for each year of highschool (Heaven to Betsy, Betsy In Spite of Herself, Betsy Was A Junior, Betsy and Joe), one for her year abroad (Betsy and the Great World), and one for her return to America and the beginning of her marriage (Betsy's Wedding). They are so good and my sisters and I have read them so many times the last three books had to be taped together so that the spines wouldn't fall apart. I'm really not kidding. Go read them if you never have! They're some of the best books out there.

I have two more things to do (Top Five fanon ships and Top Five canon ships for [personal profile] animus_wyrmis ) but I have to go to co-op in half an hour and I haven't finished my homework yet, and there's fourteen ships in all to detail (two honorable mentions for each category), so I really need to go finish that. I shall do them later! Oh my beautiful ships.

OMG I LOVE THIS WHOLE POST. PETER/SUSAN! SKANDAR!

I read the Betsy-Tacy-Tib books, too! Just the kid ones, though. I'm more of an Anne of Green Gables girl.

SKANDAR AND PETER/SUSAN EEEEEE. *happy sigh*

Sometime you should read the others, too! They really are fabulous, and Betsy does become a writer, and they're... fairly similar I guess in parts, to Anne of Green Gables. If you haven't, sometime you should try them. The last three especially are FABULOUS.

Will and Anna look so young in those clips from LWW. Awwwww, you just want to hug them.

Where is that picture of Gwen from? The dress is gorgeous.

Ooh, which parts especially?

I knowwww, they are so young and adorable! *hugs them*

MERLIN SEASON TWO PROMO PICS, OMG. IT IS SO AWESOME. *cannot wait*

ALLLLLL OF IT. *rage* But especially I guess the parts where he has Mr. and Mrs. and Susan Pevensie going to America. In summer of 1942. Because she's the pretty one of the family (but she's only like 12! WUT.) And would Peter be studying for university when he is possibly 13? With a special tutor? I am just... ARGH.

...I kinda hope Gwen gets more than one dress this season. She's soooo pretty though. /blatant favoritism

I...I have had to assume that the Pevensies didn't get to the Professor's until way late in the war, and that...Susan...was twelve in LWW (lol, maybe they were sent to someone else's house first and Ed was so bad they got kicked out)? I DON'T KNOW. I went through it all somewhere and tried to figure it out, but I failed. And you're like, DUDE, you wouldn't even have to research, you were RIGHT THERE ALL THE TIME AGH.

Also the White Witch, hundred years' winter...so where do the Beavers get oranges and sugar and things?

SHE IS GORGEOUS. And even if she only has one dress, this season's dress is prettier. OMG SO PRETTY.

I sometimes blatantly ignore the book canon because it does not compute in my brain, what no that does not I don't even aaaahhhhhhh. *runs away* I KNOW! He was there! He has NO EXCUSE for his non-existent research!

... that's the sort of mystery you grab a red pen for. :P

lsasfdkljsdf skandar! every time I see him I go, "guh, please stop being so much younger than me!" I particularly love his shirt in the last picture. Actually I love his everything in that one. waist! cuffs! stare! yeah, he needs no explaining.

Raisin bread is my FAVORITE. yummmmm. I have never made bread, but I can only imagine it would be the most delicious thing ever. And those quesadillos sound awesome too.

That Peter/Susan picture (well, I guess Will/Anna because they are not in character?) is SO ADORABLE. they are all young and sweet! I have given up feeling guilty about shipping Peter/Susan. hear hear to your defense!

SKANDAR ahlsdkjglsdkfh;jhgkdsjf HE IS MY AGE. It's a shame I'll probably never meet him, because I'm pretty sure we'd get along like a house on fire, even if he wasn't so insanely handsome.

RAISIN BREADDD! It's lots of fun to make from scratch, especially when you're stressed/angry/upset because kneading is like physical therapy or something. It makes you feel loads better.

THEY ARE SO AWESOME TOGETHER! And yeah, I've pretty much given up feeling guilty. If people judge me for it, I will shove my hand in their face and make them read Peter/Susan fic. LOTS OF IT. *evil glee*

LUCKY DUCK <3 And do not say you will probably never meet him, because you neeever knowwww! What if he decides to do a movie that films where you live? I am sure there are movies about this sort of love story :))

Awesome. I need to try this. If I made my own raisin bread, life would be perfect.

heeee! My town actually has had at least two movies filmed in it, and they're filming one downtown right now (or were Saturday, at least). But I am moving to England, so!

I can give you the recipe I use, if you want, and if you have problems I might know how to fix them (and if I don't, my mom will. She has been making bread from scratch for a long, long time. She used to even grind her own wheat! Then our grinder broke. D:)

Wow, moving to England! When? Where? Exciting!

Could I have the recipe? I've never made bread before but I think my mom has, so she'd be able to help me some. I am super impressed by how hardcore your mom is in the kitchen :D wheat grinding! awesome!

It's more of a plan than an actuality at the moment, but I'm crossing my fingers that I can take a gap year once I graduate highschool and find a job in England for a year before taking college (with a semester or year abroad in England or Europe hopefully) and then moving to England, if I'm still as much in love with it as I am now. (which is likely)

I'm not at home right now, but I shall message it to you soon! (maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow afternoon.) yeah, my mom's pretty awesome. *proud* we actually still have two buckets of wheat from when the grinder broke, and she's used mixes maybe twice in her life, while feeding anywhere from three to eight people for 26 years. um. I may be really, really proud of her.

That sounds really cool! I hope it works out for you! My brother is actually thinking of going to college in England. He hasn't planned much for it, or even found a school there to apply to, but he talks about it. It seems like a really great idea if what you want is to go to England. Sometimes I think I should've spent more effort trying to go abroad to South America considering how bad I want it. so you should totally go for it, so I can live through you vicariously ;)

You certainly have reason to be proud! Moms are amazing, they really are.
