So, it is Three Weeks for Dreamwidth. I'm planning to do a GK reaction post sometime, because that was a beautiful, beautiful show, in the way truth is beautiful. And I'm also snagging from everywhere:
What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say "I should write that entry about $foo I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for?
Alternatively, you can request fic for any of my fandoms that may or may not get written (ACK FINALS) and posted only on DW.
ALSO for those SPN fans reading this, read Below skyscrapers (for a dropout). It's for an exchange, so the author's anonymous at the moment. It's Dean/Castiel, with some of the most well-done worldbuilding I've seen in a long time. I almost wish it was original work, because the world created in this fic is incredible, so pulled together, all these little details at the edges.

Date: 2010-05-03 03:08 am (UTC)OR OR OR how 'bout this, o wondrous maker of the Supernatural primer - would you post about SPN fan fic and good places to go to start reading that stuff? Because fairly soon I'm going to be hitting season 4, and then I feel like I'll be able to actually start reading SPN fan fic, since I'll know Castiel.

Date: 2010-05-04 03:58 am (UTC)oh man, I don't do much following of SPN fic. I can do some really basic pointing out stuff (sawedoffrecs on LJ is a good place to start, I think, and I've got my SPN bookmarks here), but predominantly I stay out of SPN fandom. Lass, on the other hand, has crazy amounts of recs, I believe! her SPN tag is here.

Date: 2010-05-01 11:55 pm (UTC)I dunno - LJ's decisions are making me a little uncomfortable, and also I'm trying to offer my support to Dreamwidth for those on my f-list/r-list who are REALLY uncomfortable with their decisions and are based solely (or almost solely) over there.

Date: 2010-05-02 12:18 am (UTC)so I tried looking up what went on and it looks like there's some 2007 Strikethrough to it, mostly about LJ's business model and the way it's going Russian and fired a bunch of its American staff without much notice or severance pay - but I'm cynical about the idea that DW is fundamentally a nicer more fan-friendly place and will continue to be that.
Have you heard convincing arguments? sorry, you don't have to explain yourself or anything, I'm just not sure I get the mass movement over there.

Date: 2010-05-02 04:47 pm (UTC)But yeah, don't feel like you have to justify yourself to us! I am just being curious.

Date: 2010-05-10 04:47 pm (UTC)yup, you need codes, and I've actually just gotten some more. (plus there's some available on dw_codesharing over on DW.)
and it's no problem at all! I don't feel like I'm being made to justify myself at all. <3

Date: 2010-05-10 04:45 pm (UTC)The things that I have issues with about LJ are that they have recently made changes in code, or other things, without any notice, one where there was some sort of redirect issue. I'm not clear on the technical issues of that, but what I did understand was that LJ was using outgoing links to generate revenue for them and hadn't notified anyone. There have been other kerfluffles that I've read a bit about and not retained any active knowledge about it, but all in all it just makes me uneasy.
As for why I feel a lot more comfortable with DW's policies, etc., this post explains pretty well. Plus I like their diversity statement, and that it's run by fans and that isn't changing (it's pretty much written into the business policies). So all in all, I'm not uncomfortable with LJ to the point of leaving it, but I enjoy also having a Dreamwidth. it feels kind of weird having two separate groups of friends, but I can deal with it, I guess.

Date: 2010-05-10 07:40 pm (UTC)It is nice not to have that break between businessperson administration and our fannish communities, that makes sense. I guess I am automatically suspicious of all the idealism, gosh what an awful college student I am, way too cynical. I think the main thing that gets me is the inconvenience of having two separate groups of friends, but even that is a normal form of social life. I just miss the days when you could think of what's going on in fandom as entirely within LJ and thus less hard to find, heh.
Thanks for the link and the input! I am thinking about DW, I guess. It seems like it is growing in significance as a fandom location/organization sufficiently independent of whatever fannish things are going on at LJ.
