100th? Huh.

be_themoon: I want a better world. By me. (LotR: Eowyn at funeral)
So I thought, this being my 100th post, I'd go for something special. And then I was like 'aw whatever, I'm too busy trying to catch plot bunnies.'

And then I kind of sort of caught it, but it only gave me two three four characters, so I'm just going to put down the little bit it gave me because I really don't want to forget this. Just in case it turns into a plot and all, y'know.

Imogene (I'm not sure about this name AT ALL. I halfway want to name her Sidonie, or Risa, or Maris, or even Lupe) somethingorother (look, I'm not doing last names till I do at least a bit of research - AU or no, I'm keeping the basics of Roman naming). Around 15 or 16.
Her brother, Flavian somethingorother. Around 25. Member of one of the two legions currently stationed on the Wall, head of the small group of Horse.
Their mother, somewhere around 42, whose name I have not been given. I'm not sure how terribly important she is, but I do know that her husband was a member of the legions and died some several years back during the ill-fated Battle Beyond the Wall. Imogene was probably 3 or 4 at the time.
Flavian's best friend, whose name I don't know. Probably something Spanish, because that's where he's from. He's 22, a centaur, and quite good at his job, good enough to have become Flavian's lieutenant/the equivalent within four years. He and Imogene get along rather well.

Also, I'm trying to figure out why the Wall is so bustling. I mean, this is the only place the Picts come for supplies in all of Rome (and there are Picts who come back and forth, and individual Romans who come back and forth - it's just the Legions the Picts don't ever let through). So that would contribute to it, but I'm pretty sure there's another reason too. And it has to be a good one, because this is the Wall, the Picts aren't exactly friendly, and they've been known to kidnap people here. REASON. NEEDED.

Look, I am NOT EVEN SURE WHERE THIS IS COMING FROM.

Basically, imagine Hadrian's wall, only bigger, stronger, and more... magic-y. Like, centaurs and griffins and such on both sides. And there's the demi-gods, mostly just called the Small Gods, of which there are hundreds, but the most important one on the wall is The Lady of The Wall, who was a very real person some fifty or sixty years back. Something she did (I think somehow she used Old Magic to basically imbue the entire goddamn Wall with her spirit and magic and then died) made her into a Small God in the people's eyes, and they pray to her a lot.

I think basically this is an AU of Roman Britain, where all the world has all these crazy magical creatures. And as before, Rome came to a halt here at the Wall At the North, because - well, because. I'll explain it sometime. I don't even really have characters, except for a girl and perhaps her older brother (older by probably eight or nine years). He's a soldier on the Wall, and she lives on it with her mother, and look, I DON'T EVEN KNOW.

I even have an opening paragraph-ish thing. WEIRD.

"The Wall at the North stretched from one end of Britain to the other, from Wallsend-East to Wallsend-West. It was the separating line, the place that said 'here ends the Roman Empire.' Beyond the Wall were the Little Painted People, the Picts of the North, with their Old Magic and their wild eyes. Behind the Wall, protected by it, were the legions of Rome, their families, an entire people watching the darkness, half-expecting it to bring their doom.

Behind the Wall, there was only New Magic, the magic of small tricks and parties. Beyond the Wall there was the Old Magic, magic that could swallow up whole legions and build hills of their bones.

The Wall kept the line of their lives distinct, and the Lady of the Wall kept the Wall."

My brain's decided to go all world-building, what if-fy on me. NO REALLY. I mean, look, you've got the Romans in Britain, right? And I'm not even going to go into the whole King Arthur legends things, because that has been done so many times and even a couple of times (BBC Merlin, Rosemary Sutcliff's 'Sword At Sunset') REALLY WELL, and look I'm just not going there. DANGEROUS TERRITORY.

But you do have the lovely Hadrian's Wall, and can you imagine living there? It's like one huge city that stretches across most of Britain, soldiers everywhere, and then just add magical creatures and the beautiful, lovely MESS you've got just waiting to be written. And on top of all that you've got Carausius, the Little Emperor who was murdered by Allectus.

And you've got the beacons and the lights going out across Britain and me going incoherent alkhsgkd;fsdkghjldkfjsd.

Oh god, now my brain is just investigating ROME. ROME WITH MAGIC. Or more, magic things. And how it could have been their secret and LOOK BRAIN, I'M SICK AND TIRED AND ARE YOU SURE THIS IS THE BEST TIME?

... darn. It is.

ETA: OMG. SO SO. ROME. BRITAIN. ONLY NOT REALLY, SOMEWHERE ELSE. WITH MAGIC.

My brain really needs to just STOP GIVING ME RANDOM CRACK IDEAS. *dies*

COMPLETELY UNRELATED ETA
: AHAHAHAHA I HAS SALT! *goes to read*
